Myopia Control

PONSIOEN OPTICS IS A RECOGNIZED MYOPIA MANAGEMENT EXPERT

At Ponsioen Optiek we are proud to be Myopia Control Expert. What that means: We take care of your child's eyes. We look beyond today's view: we look at the view of today and tomorrow.

WHAT IS MYOPIA?

Myopia is the scientific term for nearsightedness. If you are nearsighted, you see well up close, while your far vision is blurry. This blurry vision is because your eye is growing so much in the (axial) length that the image you are looking at is no longer imaged on the retina, but in front of it. You then need a correction with a minus strength to see clearly again.

WHY ARE WE SPECIALIZED IN MYOPIA MANAGEMENT?

Our eyes help us to learn, to discover, to enjoy. It's important to take care of them, especially if they have to last a lifetime. Unfortunately, the trend is for our children to become increasingly short-sighted earlier and more strongly.1 Particularly young people between the ages of 6 and 17 often experience the greatest myopia progression.2 This group is at risk of becoming highly short-sighted later in life. We want to prevent this, because (high) nearsightedness is directly related to various eye disorders with (severe) low vision as a possible consequence.3,4 In other words: the lower the nearsightedness, the better this is for the eyes.

The answer? Recognize and treat nearsightedness, or the risk thereof, in children and young people. We focus on inhibiting worsening myopia, or progressive myopia, as much as possible. This means, among other things, identifying whether your child is at risk of becoming short-sighted, or drawing up a tailor-made treatment plan in the event of short-sightedness to prevent aggravation as much as possible; myopia management. There are, among other things, special contact lenses and glasses for this.

MYOPIA AS A SPECIALISM

(Early) nearsightedness in your child can be recognized by signals such as rubbing the eyes a lot, complaints about tired eyes and being unable to see objects in the distance. However, progressive myopia is not always immediately noticeable. Therefore, have your child's eyes checked regularly and teach them the 20-20-2 lifestyle rule: after 20 minutes of close-up viewing, a break of 20 seconds to look into the distance and outside for at least 2 hours a day. This way we can tackle early myopia in time.

Our team specializes in myopia management in children. You can recognize a certified Kijk Verder Optics Store by the title 'Approved Myopia Control Expert'. Knowing more? Make an appointment for a Kijk Verder Eye Check with your son or daughter in our store in Alphen aan den Rijn.
