7 Reasons why Sunglasses for Children are Important

Everyone knows you should apply sunscreen to your child's skin when the sun is shining.

But did you know it's also very important to protect your child's eyes with good sunglasses? The same UV rays that sunscreen protects the skin from can also cause irreversible damage to your child's eyes. Read on to find out why.

1) Children's Eyes are Very Sensitive to UV Rays

Children's eyes are much more sensitive to UV radiation than those of adults because their irises contain less pigment and their pupils are larger. Babies have a transparent lens in their first year of life, allowing 90% of UVA and 50% of UVB rays to penetrate the retina.

2) UV-Damaged Eyes are More Prone to Eye Diseases

Exposure to excessive UV radiation can cause corneal damage, increasing the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts, ocular melanomas, and corneal inflammations. The effects of UV radiation on the eyes can appear years later and are often not immediately noticeable.

3) Blinking Frequency in Babies and Toddlers is Not Fully Developed

Babies and toddlers do not blink as often as adults, making them more susceptible to eye damage from UV radiation.

4) Not Wearing Sunglasses Can Cause Headaches

Not wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight can cause headaches in your child. Squinting against the sun increases muscle tension around the eyes and forehead.

5) Sunglasses Protect Against Reflections

While a hat or parasol can help protect against direct UV radiation, sunglasses are still necessary to shield your child's eyes from reflections. Especially on the beach or near water and snow, sunglasses are essential!

6) Creating a Good Habit

Get your child used to wearing sunglasses from an early age so it becomes a habit. Going outside in sunny weather? That means sunscreen and sunglasses!

7) And Looking Cool, of Course

With a cool pair of sunglasses, your child will look absolutely stylish ;-)
